Ocean City High School's Amy Andersen truly is at the head of her class, creating an American Sign Language curriculum eight years ago which has blossomed into an impressive program at OCHS. Recently, we worked with Amy to create a feature piece for New Jersey School Boards Association's November/December issue of School Leader magazine on her many accomplishments.

We've known for quite some time that Ross Cruz, Environmental STEM teacher at Winslow Township Middle School, is a pro, but now everyone else knows it too! The smile never faded from Ross' face as he was honored as one of 10 Axalta/Eagles All-Pro Teachers. Our own Julie Bonette represented LBC at the event, held at Lincoln Financial Field, as LBC helped guide WTMS Principal Stella Nwanguma's nomination of Ross earlier this school year. The highlight of the night was meeting Philadelphia Eagles Safety Chris Maragos (center in the first few photos).

As we approach the holidays, many are counting the things for which they are thankful. The staff members of Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly can add to their lists the wellness program the district started last year. It includes free classes such as yoga, Pilates, and nutrition, as well as access to bicycles and a wellness coach. In early November, the school even held its First Annual Staff Wellness Fair. We're extra thankful that reporters at The Courier-Post and The Burlington County Times realized how special this program is.

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS SERVE UP SONGS, LUNCH & HONOR

11/11/2016

The students and staff of Middle Township Middle School heard what it means to serve in the most honorable way – by serving one’s country – at the school’s Fourth Annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 8. The entire student body – about 575 sixth- through eighth-graders – heard from four honored speakers and veterans, as well as patriotic songs from the Band and Choir. Area veterans and honorary guests, including several Board of Education members and  teachers who have served in the armed forces, were then treated to a special lunch in the school’s media center, served by National Junior Honor Society students. Laura Bishop Communications was proud to be there to hear the veterans’ stories and see the students’ respect.

Cameron McAndrew and Lucas Costa-Carlos, both fifth-graders at Van Zant Elementary School in Evesham, were having lunch in the cafeteria last month when suddenly Cameron choked on a nacho. After Cameron gave the universal sign for choking, Lucas sprang into action, immediately performing the Heimlich maneuver until Cameron’s airway was clear. For their lifesaving actions, both boys were honored in front of the entire school and their families by the Evesham Fire-Rescue… Lucas even received the Citizens Lifesaving Award! LBC was there to capture it all, which led to articles on SNJ Today and in the Courier-Post!

A hawk was set free in mid-August after six weeks in the wildlife hospital at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford – the busiest in the state. When he was initially found, he was unable to fly or hunt on his own, and was dehydrated and underweight. The staff at Cedar Run rehabilitated the hawk, including allowing him to practice flying and hunting in the on-site Pre-release Flight Testing Aviary, before releasing him exactly where he was found. When we heard Adedamola Ojeikere’s story, we knew we had to help tell it. The formerly homeless 21-year-old came to Crossroads Programs two years ago and turned his life around in order to get a job and eventually join the United States Navy. Adedamola shipped off to Chicago on July 18 to become a Seaman Recruit, and The Wire, The Burlington County Times and The Central Record have lauded his honor, courage, and commitment.
